Named according to the more DISTAL bone comprising a joint

Valgus:  distal bone heads AWAY from the midline of the body

Varus:  distal bone heads TOWARD the midline of the body

HIP  normal angle of femoral inclination (neck-to-shaft) at birth: 140o, adult 120-130o
Coxa Valga

Angle of inclination >130o (adult)

(Shaft of femur heads away from the body midline)

Coxa Vara

Angle of inclination <120 (adult)

(Shaft of femur heads toward body midline.)

KNEE 
Genu Valgum (knock-kneed)

Tibia/fibula (not the joint itself) head away from midline

 

Genu Varum (bow-legged)

Tibia/fibula (not the joint itself) head toward midline

 

ANKLE
Talipes Valgus

Sole faces away from midline

Also called eversion and pronation of the foot.

Talipes Varus

Sole faces midline.

Also called inversion and supination of the foot.

GREAT TOE
Hallux Valgus (bunion)

Great toe heads away from the midline of the body.

 

Hallux Varus (unusual variant in shoe-wearing populations)

Great toe heads toward midline of the body.
